Maybe you know a ‘Keith’. Maybe you are ‘Keith’. Maybe, like me, you’ve ever felt a little lost, a little unsure of what you truly want from this crazy thing called life.
I spend a lot of time thinking about what Keith wants. It’s not always a clear picture. Sometimes it’s a jumbled mess of desires, anxieties, and a whole lot of “stuff” that swirls around in my head. But lately, I’ve been trying to untangle it all.
Safety and Security: A Basic Human Need
High on the list, for sure, is safety. A safe place to sleep, a safe place to think, a safe place to just be myself. It sounds simple, but it can feel far from it. Maybe it’s the echoes of a loud argument from childhood, or the constant feeling of being on edge in the world. Whatever it is, feeling safe is the foundation for everything else.
Love and Support: Filling the Emotional Cup
Next comes love and support. We all need that feeling of connection, of knowing someone has our back. It can be from a partner, a family member, a best friend – whoever fills your cup with kindness and understanding. Let’s face it, life throws curveballs, and having someone to catch you when you stumble makes all the difference.
Happiness: The Elusive Butterfly
Ah, happiness. That ever-elusive butterfly we all chase. For some, it’s about grand gestures and achieving big dreams. For others, it’s the quiet moments of joy – a good book, a sunny day, a delicious meal. Truth is, happiness probably isn’t one thing, but a collection of these little moments strung together.
Freedom to Be Myself: Breaking Free from Masks
But here’s the thing: you can’t truly experience those happy moments if you’re constantly wearing a mask. I want to be myself, whoever that may be. The funny guy, the quiet observer, the artist with a wild imagination – it doesn’t matter. What matters is feeling comfortable enough to shed the facades and just be me.
Appreciation: A Pat on the Back for a Job Well Done
We all crave a little appreciation or even validation now and then. A simple “thank you” can go a long way. I want to feel like my efforts are seen, I want to feel like I am valued. Maybe it’s the recognition from your partner, job well done at work, or maybe it’s just knowing a loved one appreciates the little things you do.
Loyalty: A Two-Way Street
Loyalty is a two-way street. I want to be around people who are there for the long haul, through thick and thin. People who will have my back, just like I will have theirs. It’s about trust, about knowing you can count on someone, no matter what.
This list isn’t exhaustive. And, like everyone else, I am a complex and flawed person with ever-evolving desires. But these are some of the core things that make me tick.
So, how can we I get what I want?
The answer is you’ll never get everything you want. And that’s OK. But, the good news is, a lot of these things are within our reach. We can create safe spaces, offer a listening ear, celebrate the little victories, and be the kind of person we ourselves would want to have.
Remember, Keith is you, me, and everyone else. We all have these basic human needs. By striving to fulfill them for ourselves and others, we can create a world where everyone feels a little more secure, a little more loved, and a little closer to being the best version of ourselves.
What does Keith want? Maybe it’s not that different from what you want. Maybe, deep down, we all just want to feel safe, loved, and free to be who we truly are. And maybe, just maybe, that’s the key to a life that’s not just good, but truly fulfilling.
